Manderwear Glossary:

A – C

Anatomic / Anatomic Fit: A design approach that strictly adheres to the physical characteristics of the male body.

Anatomic Pouch: A three-dimensionally shaped fabric pocket in the front area of underwear, modeled after the male anatomy.

Anti-Chafing Shorts: Underwear specifically designed to prevent chafing through a textile barrier.

Anti-Sweat (Function): Properties of a textile aimed at wicking away sweat from the body.

Breathability: The ability of a textile to allow water vapor to escape from the inside to the outside.

Bamboo (Textile context): A colloquial, but technically incorrect and misleading term for viscose made from bamboo cellulose. The term is often used to suggest a naturalness that the chemical-technical manufacturing process of the regenerated fiber does not reflect.

Cotton: A natural plant fiber. It is skin-friendly but has lower moisture-wicking properties than modern regenerated fibers, as it stores water strongly within the fiber and releases it slowly.

Boxer Brief: A snug-fitting underwear style with legs, combining the characteristics of briefs with the shape of boxer shorts.

Boxer Shorts: Traditionally loose-fitting underwear with legs, allowing for a largely physiological positioning of the genitals.

Brief: Classic, snug-fitting underwear without legs, where the genitals are lifted and/or compressed (brief-style).

Waistband Circumference: The horizontal circular measurement of the underwear at the top elastic waistband.

D – F

Stretch Properties: The ability of a fabric to yield under tensile stress and then return to its original shape.

Elastane: A synthetic man-made fiber with extremely high elasticity. It ensures the lasting shape retention and fit of underwear.

Ergonomics / Ergonomic: Product design that optimizes the interaction between humans and objects.

Fertility (Male): The biological fertility of a man. It is largely determined by the number and health of sperm.

Moisture Absorption: The ability of fibers to absorb moisture (liquid or vapor) from the environment and bind it within the fiber.

Flatlock Seam: Specialized seam for flatly joining fabric pieces in one plane without a protruding seam allowance.

Functional Clothing: Textiles that offer functional added value beyond mere body covering (e.g., sweat transport, thermoregulation).

G – I

Genitals (Male): The entirety of the penis and scrotum, including the testicles.

Size Calculator: An interactive tool that determines the optimal size based on individual measurements (waistband circumference, thigh circumference).

Size Chart: Standardized overview of body measurements to clothing sizes.

Heat Buildup: Accumulation of thermal energy under the textile, which can lead to an increase in temperature.

Ice Silk: Marketing term for highly smooth synthetic fibers (mostly polyester blends) with high thermal conductivity, which create an immediate cooling effect on the skin.

Seamless Interior: The complete absence of visible threads or seam structures on the inside of the textile to avoid mechanical irritation.

Intertrigo (Chafing / Rash): An inflammatory dermatosis that occurs in skin folds. It is usually caused by the combination of moisture (sweat), heat, and friction (skin on skin).

K – M

Lesser Pelvis (Male): The lower part of the pelvic cavity, which houses the bladder, prostate, and rectum.

Man-made Fiber / Chemical Fiber: Fibers produced through chemical processes. A distinction is made between synthetic fibers (polyester) and fibers from natural polymers (regenerated fibers).

Merino (Wool): Natural fiber from merino sheep's wool.

Mesh: Net-like fabric with an open structure for ventilation.

Modal: A regenerated fiber, usually derived from beech wood cellulose. It is dimensionally stable, extremely soft, and has high moisture absorption.

N – P

Natural Fiber: Fibers obtained directly from nature without chemical conversion (e.g., cotton, merino).

Thigh Circumference: Circular measurement around the thigh at a defined height below the crotch.

Performance Underwear: Underwear for high physical exertion with functions adapted to the stress.

Polyester: A synthetic man-made fiber. Very durable and quick-drying, but with low moisture absorption.

Pouch Underwear: Men's underwear with an integrated pouch to accommodate the genitals. Synonyms: Pouch Boxer Briefs, Pouch Underwear.

S

Seamless: Seamless or low-seam processing, e.g., using circular knitting, to eliminate mechanical friction points.

Sweat Transport: Mechanism by which moisture is wicked away from the skin into or through the textile.

Sweating: Physiological cooling mechanism of the body by releasing water to the skin surface to create evaporative cooling.

Spermatogenesis: The biological process of sperm formation and maturation. This is highly temperature-dependent (requires approx. 2-3 degrees below core body temperature).

Support: Marketing term for the support and/or compression function of underwear that fixes the genitals and often has a compressing effect.

Suspensorium: Functional construction of the front part of the underwear, designed to lift and support the male genitals (see also Support).

T – Z

Thermoregulation: Regulation of body temperature.

Wearing Comfort: Perceived sum of tactile softness, ergonomic fit, and thermophysiological well-being.

Evaporative Cooling: Energy required to evaporate water. This creates a cooling effect when sweating.

Viscose: A regenerated fiber, made from natural cellulose (e.g., from bamboo) using chemical processes.

Water Vapor Permeability: Technical term for the ability of a fabric to allow gaseous sweat to escape.

Chafing: Mechanical irritation of the skin due to friction. Medically associated with intertrigo.
